Samsung has announced its sustainability vision for mobile: Galaxy for the Planet. Samsung will work to achieve its initial goals by 2025, and it will aim to evolve its commitments to address new challenges beyond 2025. Samsung is investing in new and innovative eco-conscious materials for its products. With the goal of using recycled material across all new mobile products by 2025, Samsung will use various recycled materials within its products, taking their strength, aesthetics and durability into consideration. It is also working towards the full elimination of single-use plastics from product packaging by 2025.

Sustainability goals:

  • Incorporate recycled material in all new mobile products by 2025
  • Eliminate all plastics in mobile packaging by 2025
  • Reduce standby power consumption of all smartphone chargers to below 0.005W by 2025
  • Achieve zero waste to landfill by 2025

“We believe that everyone has a role to play in providing innovative solutions that protect the planet for generations to come. Samsung understands our efforts need to match our scale, our influence and the magnitude of the entire Galaxy ecosystem around the world,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “Galaxy for the Planet is an important step in our journey toward creating a more sustainable world, and we will do so with the openness, transparency and collaboration that drives everything we do.”

Samsung has confirmed the release of its customisable Galaxy Watch 4 series. Both of the pieces features new, robust straps that can be changed. For those particularly keen on personalisation, the watch will have over 45 different watch face designs. The latest wearable can also track sleeping patterns, blood pressure, and Body Composition Measurements, developed with BIA, providing a much more accurate health reading than just weight. Samsung’s BioActive Sensor measures body fat percentage, skeletal muscle, body water, and more. The Galaxy Watch 4 series has all of the features that FitBit has, meaning the users can set goals and track progress, while also connecting with friends and family to motivate one another.

The upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 series will be powered by the new Samsung Exynos W920, a new 5nm wearable processor with an integrated LTE modem. The Galaxy Watch series 4 is anticipated to be released at Galaxy Unpacked 2021.

The Exynos W920 has two Arm Cortex-A55 cores for efficient, high-performing processing, and an Arm Mali-G68 GPU that has improved CPU performance by around 20%. It has 10 times better graphics performance than its predecessor. This overall improvement in performance means that the Exynos W920 can launch applications faster, with a more vibrant 3D graphical user interface (GUI) on a device’s qHD (960×540) display.

As opposed to powering up the main CPU for Always-on-display (AOD), the W920 activates a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, which reduces display power consumption under AOD mode compared to its previous Exynos model. The Exynos W920 is embedded with a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem as well as a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 for tracking speed, distance and elevation during outdoor activities. The Exynos W920 supports a new unified wearable platform Samsung built with Google. It will be first applied to the next Galaxy Watch model.

This overall improvement in performance means that the Exynos W920 can launch applications faster, with a more vibrant 3D graphical user interface (GUI) on a device’s qHD (960×540) display.

The Exynos W920 comes in the smallest package available in the wearable market, with Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FO-PLP). The technology incorporates the Exynos W920, power management IC (PMIC), LPDDR4 and embedded multimedia card (eMMC) in the same package using System-in-Package-embedded Package on Package (SiP-ePoP) configuration.

Some of the new products and product prices have been leaked ahead of Galaxy Unpacked 2021, though the details have not been confirmed by Samsung. Further leaks have suggested that the Z Flip 3 will have a 1.9-inch outer screen with a 6.7-inch internal flexible display, the latter of which will run at 120Hz and have dual 12-megapixel rear cameras and a 10-megapixel selfie shooter.

Samsung has already announced its new Galaxy Watch with the One UI Watch, which is co-engineered with Google, but numerous renders of the Galaxy watch 4 have also been leaked.

It has also been suggested that Samsung fans may witness the launch of a new generation of Galaxy Buds, which are reported to be similar to the first generation, but with a range of colours to choose from. Though it may appear that everything has already been revealed or leaked, we might expect Samsung to unveil a product not yet leaked, in a similar launch nature to that of Apple launch events.
